I wasn’t a fan of the early Star Trek TV series from the 1960’s, but when my husband and I were newly married we got hooked on ‘The Next Generation’ and over time would say that we have become ‘Trekkies’. For those who don’t know, Spock is an iconic character from the Star Trek franchise, and his character is from the planet Vulcan.
The greeting with the hand gesture was introduced by the actor Lennod Nimroy who played Spock. It was from his Jewish background and used as a blessing. When I read Proverbs 3:1-2 in the NIV translation, the end of the verse sounded a lot like the Vulcan greeting of ‘Live long and prosper’ The original NIV translation is: ‘My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.’
