The whole book of Revelation is highly symbolic and open to many interpretations, including the seven letters to the churches that are featured in chapters 2 and 3. I chose to research the background and character of the original church and see what teachings and warnings we can glean from it for our own churches and personal lives. The letter for the church at Ephesus is the first letter.
The church of Ephesus in 95AD had much to commend it for, and the words I used to identify their good works are: Hard work, perseverance, action, knowledge & sacrifice. The words are stencilled all over the background to give the impression of busyness. The church held onto true Godly teaching and stood against false teaching. However, even though there was much to commend the church for, it had forsaken its love for Christ and for others, and it labelled as ‘the loveless church’ amongst the seven churches listed in the book of Revelation.
The heart is drained, and in parts it can be seen through like it doesn’t have much substance. Amongst all the busy background is a statement that had its origins from 1 Corinthians chapter 13 which is known as ‘the love chapter’. This is the warning to believers: sure, do-good things, but don’t forsake the most important thing, which is love for Christ and for others. Love is to be the first and greatest importance.
