‘Peace Of God’

I had been pondering on the words of Jesus found in the book of John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your heart be troubled and do not be afraid.”
When Jesus was saying this statement to his disciples, he knew of his own crucifixion that was shortly to take place.  Jesus also knew the hardships, persecutions and executions that his disciples were going to face because of their faith in him.  So what peace was Jesus talking about for his disciples and all of us who believe?
I believe He speaks of an inner peace.  I like how the Living Bible translates John 14:27
“I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart!  And the peace I give isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives.  So don’t be troubled or afraid.”  In the application notes that are in my Living Bible, it has this comment on the verse:  “The result of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives is deep and lasting peace.  Unlike worldly peace, which is usually defined as the absence of conflict, this peace is confident assurance in any circumstance; with this kind of peace, we have no need to fear the present or the future.”
As I wanted to paint a picture about this verse, I was wondering what symbol or image I could use to communicate the peace we have from God.  Like with most creative thinking, ideas normally come while doing a left-brain activity, such as driving or house cleaning.  That is what happened as I was mulling over this painting while vacuuming and I suddenly realised the significance of the empty tomb and knew that it was the key image.
Jesus’ resurrection shows us that he is who he said he is.  All his promises are true.  His promise of salvation to those who believe and follow him can be trusted.  He is with us, and nothing can separate us from the love of God that is ours in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:35-39).
Jesus said that he was going to prepare a place in heaven for us (John 14:1-4).  In Revelation, heaven is described in chapter 21:3-4 as God’s dwelling place with mankind and ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes.  There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Peace be with you.
