‘The Letter to Ephesus – version 2’
From a series of work inspired by the book of Revelation
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Size: 60cm x 60cm

The whole book of Revelation is highly symbolic and open to many interpretations, including the seven letters to the churches that are featured in chapters 2 and 3.  I chose to research the background and character of the original church and see what teachings and warnings we can glean from it for our own churches and personal lives.  The letter for the church at Ephesus is the first letter.

After doing the first version of ‘The Letter to Ephesus’ I wanted to paint something that wasn’t so visually busy.  I simplified the background for this version and I have kept the colouring cool.  The words are limited to give clarity and impact, but it is the same words as in version 1.  The church was commended for their: perseverance, hard work, knowledge, action & sacrifice.

The white and gold is God illuminating the problem – which is the state of their heart, and that the church’s love for Christ and for others had been forsaken.  I stencilled some wording with moulding paste to give some dimension so it could still be read with the white & gold washing over them.

I have put the composition right of centre, which I have come to realise that I have been continuously doing subconsciously over the years.  I have been favouring the right-hand side for God’s glory, and also for explanation if using words.
