Jesus encouraged us to be salt and to be light.  He would often use symbols to help teach a point.  Salt is used for seasoning food that brings out flavour.  In the old times without fridges, salt was used to preserve meat from rotting.  As it says in the “Living Bible’ notes for this verse ‘We are to put a God perspective I the world to stop the moral decay in society’.  With regards to being light, light is needed during dark times so that you don’t stumble and you can see the path you need to take.

I was thinking about the modern-day images for salt and light, and thought that the cross can be used in both the images of a salt shaker and a light bulb.  I liked the idea of simplifying the images and not make it complicated, even the ‘Be’ is simplified to just the letter.

We can’t reach our full potential of being salt and light to the world without the help of what Christ did for us on the cross.
